Why a Doula?

Births attended by Doulas are likely to be shorter, with fewer complications requiring less medical interventions. The likelihood of postpartum depression is greatly reduced resulting in a happier, healthier mother and nursing infant. In collaboration with Doulas, Mothers often find a deep connection to their primal ability to give birth and also have a flexible outlook regarding choices in childbirth.

It has been proven that when a woman is supported by a Doula she will be:
  • 25% more likely to have a shorter birth
  • 30% less likely to use pain medication
  • 60% less likely to want an epidural
  • 50% less likely to have a Cesarean birth
  • 40% less likely to have a forceps delivery

Doula is a Greek word that has come to mean a woman that serves women. Doulas are experienced in the non-medical aspects of childbirth. Without judgment they provide women and their partners with emotional, physical and informational supportbefore, during and after the birth of their babies.

“Without our families here, we felt a bit of a void when it came to labour support
and knowledge. You filled that void beyond our expectations. Your kind words,
gentle guidance and experience made me feel comfortable in unexpected circumstances.”
-- Laurie and Jason
