Spirit at Birth

Printed in the summer 2007 Issue of Birthing Magazine

When I am in service to a birthing woman I am simply supporting her primordial need to do what she needs for herself, her baby, her emerging family. I tenderly assist her in unfolding the beauty of birthing from within.

She, curvaceous hard working birthing woman, is flowing with her laboring body, sometimes fighting the contractions - the rushes. Her wide eyes scan the space, her energy is focusing inwards, and she departs from our sphere. Still she connects and feels my unconditional love and prayer – her body begins to open. With opening, her deepest insecurities rise. I encourage her to feel lightness as she shifts her weight. Sometimes she rages as she fights the intensity. I help her focus, gently guiding her process. The rushes subside as they flow through her. She is moving to the next stage. She goes quiet, she goes deeper to find her physical and emotional strength and there Spirit greets her. She embraces Spirit - fully knowing she has the capacity to birth a being, her child. She sinks into her raw self, connecting to her innate birth wisdom. Her child is taking her toward the light.

Radiating in her fullness, she goes deeper still, she smiles, and she rests. Beside her I bring the energy down. At this tenuous time she can so easily be disrupted, stolen away from the mystery. Spirit guides me. I protect their sacred space. It is warm. In the darkness, she is waking for the work of emergence. A new Mother is about to be born; a little one is arriving.

New Mother you have within
A spring of great strength
When your little one descends so low
Feel the pressure
Let it flow

You have a depth of love
That we all see
In your crystal eyes
There is clarity

Resonating silence
Emerging child
Envelopes Mother

They meld – Mother and Child. Father is close, very close - transforming through the birth of family. I stand guard – there is nothing but this moment.
